Membership

If you are a member of APPA (the national organization), you are automatically a member of MAPPA. Read about the various levels of APPA membership.

But membership is not limited to APPA members - individuals with an interest in maintaining, protecting, and promoting the quality of educational facilities may also join. To do so, contact Chuck Scott at 309-438-2085.

Additionally, you may wish to join the MAPPA listserv.

Newcomers may wonder what "MAPPA" has to do with the long-handled association name "Midwest Association of Higher Education Facilities Officers." The connection can only be explained by noting that MAPPA originally and logically stood for the Midwest Association of Physical Plant Administrators. Several years ago, the international association, APPA, decided that the terms were becoming obsolete - that customers understood the word "facilities" better than "physical plant" and that we should be directing or leading the organizations rather than simply administering them. But the acronym "APPA" had been used so long and was so widely known that no one wanted to drop it. Hence, the international association voted to adopt the hybrid designation, "APPA: The Association of Higher Education Facilities Officers." And MAPPA, of course, is the Midwest Region of that association. That may not make sense to you newcomers, but it made more sense than the alternatives. In any event, that's what happened.
